McDonald’s moves to social media to explain how its food is made

By Chris Scott on 10/15/2014

McDonald’s Corp. is enlisting the help of social media and a former “Mythbuster” TV show co-host to boost transparency about its menu items and how they are made, the second such effort in the last three years.

The so-called “Our food. Your questions.” campaign is similar to efforts that originally ran in Canada and Australia. The program posts videos online that explore such issues as what makes up a Chicken McNugget or whether real beef is used to make McDonald’s hamburgers. Consumers can submit their questions through Twitter and see the answers on a special area of the McDonald’s website that uses YouTube and Facebook to specifically demonstrate how the products are made.

Former “Mythbuster” co-host Grant Imahara has visited McDonald’s suppliers and narrates several of the videos, and McDonald’s officials also directly respond to consumer questions via Twitter. (One of the first videos posted is a tour of a Cargill facility in Fresno, Calif.) Submitted questions so far have included “Does McDonald’s meat contain ammonia?” (No.) and “Do you add dyes to shakes and frappes?” (yes). These questions also are covered in a “frequently asked questions” section.

McDonald’s so far has not said how long the program will run.
