FDA reportedly mulls nutrition facts panel delay

Having agreed to delay implementing a final rule on disclosure of calories and other nutritional information on restaurant menus, the Food & Drug Administration reportedly is considering delaying implementation of a revamped nutrition facts panel on retail goods, according to media reports.

In testimony before House Appropriations Committee's subcommittee on agriculture, FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said, "We're sensitive as well to the issues around the time frames of the nutrition facts label and food labeling and we're going to be taking a hard look at the implementation schedule," according to a report in Politico.

The updated labels were supposed to start being used in July 2018, but industry groups asked to push that back several years so it will line up with GMO ingredient disclosure rules that are expected out of USDA.

Industry groups have asked the FDA to delay the new food labels by three years.
