Olymel to expand Canadian pork plant in $25-mln project

By Chris Scott on 6/21/2016

Canadian processor Olymel plans to spend more than $25 million to expand a pork processing facility near Montreal, creating as many as 200 jobs in the process.

The expansion project will boost the capacity at the facility by 33 percent to 40,000 hogs per week and better position Olymel to meet increasing consumer demand for pork across Canada, the company said in a news release. The effort at the company’s St-Esprit, Quebec, facility will include the construction of a refrigeration room for chilled pork and installation of redesigned production tables to handle the expected increased volume of hogs processed.

No timetable for completion of the project was announced.

"The demand for processing of pork continues to grow in Quebec and in the world and this investment will enhance our product offering in addition to creating new (jobs)" said Réjean Nadeau, president and CEO of Olymel in a statement.

Olymel earlier this month agreed to pay an undisclosed price to acquire the assets of La Fernandière, a food company in Trois-Rivières that produces a wide range of specialized sausages sold under La Fernandière brand.
